Editing Services

I edit fiction, nonfiction, and everything in between. Whether you’re in the beginning stages of development, you’re finished with a first draft, or you’re getting ready to publish, I’m here to help, and I’d love to learn more about your project!

Developmental Editing

A developmental edit is a thorough and in-depth look at your entire manuscript. It’s a “big picture” evaluation of all elements of your writing, from single words and phrases to overall structure and style. It can address plot holes or gaps, problematic characterization, and other organizational issues.

A developmental edit will address: plot and structure (fiction), argument, analysis, and organization (nonfiction), length and narrative pacing, character or content development, setting and world-building, point of view, dialogue, and description, voice and style, and writing mechanics.

Line Editing

A line edit reviews the grammar and mechanics of your writing while also paying special attention to style. This editing service focuses on correcting mechanical errors while working to improve the strength of the structure, narration, and voice of your manuscript.

A line edit will address: awkward or unclear writing, paragraph flow and transition, word choice, wordiness and redundancies, telling versus showing, dialogue and description, verb tenses and point of view, any remaining big-picture issues, obvious errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Copy Editing

A copy edit is a line-by-line, word-by-word look at the grammar, structure, and syntax of your writing, focusing on repetition, tense issues, subject-verb agreement, clarity, and more. This highly technical process ensures your book is error-free and makes for a smooth and enjoyable experience for your readers.

A copy edit will address: errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, consistency, redundancy, word choice and phrasing, and light fact-checking.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final pass a manuscript typically undergoes right before or after typesetting, as preparation for print or digital publication. Prior to publication, I will meticulously comb through your manuscript to ensure that it is error-free.

A final proofread will address: errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, hyphen use, consistency, capitalization, and sentence-level confusion that might impact the experience of the reader.
